Anyone who knows me knows I'm a true Sex and the City girl at heart. And honestly, in another life, I would have been a writer - maybe not a newspaper columnist, but definitely a novelist. I've played with different writing styles over the years, but now feels like the perfect moment to click‑clack on my keyboard and share some observations, stories, and little bits of wisdom I've collected along the way.
Maybe it's the founder in me, maybe it's the mum in me, or maybe it's just my inner Carrie Bradshaw finally getting her moment - but writing these blogs feels like coming home to a part of myself I'd forgotten.
One of the greatest privileges of this journey has been the conversations I've had with women - real, honest, vulnerable conversations. I'm genuinely grateful to every single woman who has trusted me with her story.
Last night, I had one of those moments that stayed with me. I was at a workout class - a venue I'd never been to before - and as I walked in, a group of women were talking about their own personal battles. One of them mentioned heavy bleeding. They welcomed me into the conversation, and I shared that I've started a shapewear brand designed specifically to help with this exact issue so many of us face.
I used the words "period‑proof shapewear." And one woman looked at me and said, "What does period‑proof mean?"
It stopped me in my tracks.
Back to Basics
Because in that moment, I realised how many assumptions I've made along the way — assuming everyone knew what I meant, assuming everyone understood the problems I was trying to solve with period‑ and incontinence‑proof shapewear with zippers.
I've been asked "why zippers?" plenty of times.
That simple question - "what does period‑proof mean?" - reminded me that education is just as important as innovation. And it's encouraged me to go back to basics and explain the heart of what Calm Curve is here to solve. If you'd like to know the full story of why I created Calm Curve in the first place, read about my journey here.
Now, if you've made it this far, I'm not sure if you're picturing me clicking away diligently on my laptop, in front of an open window in New York… Okay - that might be my second‑last Sex and the City reference.
So, What Does Period-Proof Actually Mean?
Back to period‑proof.
I've been relying on those words - and my tagline Zero Stress. Zero Mess. I couldn't help but wonder: does this language actually resonate with other women? Or have I been assuming we're all on the same page?
I'd genuinely love to hear everyone's thoughts.
I've even had feedback on the website saying my designs "solve too many problems," which is honestly a sentence I never imagined hearing. But it made me realise something important: if women don't fully understand what the product is, then solving multiple problems might feel confusing instead of empowering.
Let's Clear a Few Things Up
Period-proof means our shapewear is built with a protective gusset that absorbs and contains menstrual flow within the garment - so you can wear it as a standalone piece of clothing. No tampons, no throwaway pads - just the single garment, even on heavier days. No leaks. No visible lines. No anxiety about what you're wearing or where you're going. Calm Curve has 3 absorbencies. Dew (light), Breeze (Medium) and Wave (Heavy).
Choosing the style is based on the coverage you need, however the collection has been designed and tailored so that each piece can provide confidence on every day of your cycle.
- Aphrodite - for your heavy days. More that 5 super tampons of heavy duty protection in a beautifully styled shapewear with a front zipper
- Oshun - for your medium to heavy days. Nice smooth lines and last cut legs. The pad is super absorbent, not as much coverage as Aphrodite and more than 3 super tampons of absorbency
- Freya - for your lightest days. Soft floral jacquard, front zipper and lacy details on the legs. 1 super tampon worth of absorbency.
Period proof, for me when I would have loved to have had this type of design, would have enabled me to easily commute to work without fear of bleeding through my super tampon and my super pad and even some days I would also wear standard period undies. It's horrifying, but it's life. Our body is our body, our cycle is our cycle - my goal is to help as many women as I can.
Who Does Calm Curve Help?
Everyone. I think the answer is honestly, everyone.
I've had 5 star reviews from:
- Post natal ladies using the shapewear after caesarians'
- Peri menopausal ladies who've had slight weight gain
- Younger ladies who LOVE Freya's soft design and lace
- All age women with heavy bleeding with wearing Aphrodite with her large front to back coverage pad
- Mum's with smaller children running around all day
- Mum's with older children taking them to sport, drama and trying to squeeze their coffee in on the commutes in between kids activities
If you didn't know what period proof meant before, and if you weren't sure if Calm Curve was right for you before - thankyou for indulging me and letting me have my Carrie Bradshaw moment. Actually, I think there may be quite a few more blogs in this style in future where I may sneak in a 'I couldn't help but wonder' moment.
I'll finish with my favourite quote 'Can you make a mistake and miss your fate'? Like Carrie, I also say No. You wouldn't be where you are today without mistakes, so keep going.
