The truth about perimenopause symptoms, heavy bleeding, and why your body is not broken
So consider this your invitation to sit down, grab a coffee, and let's actually talk about it.
What Is Perimenopause, Exactly?
Perimenopause is the transition your body makes in the years leading up to menopause - and in Australia, it typically begins around age 47, though it can start earlier or later. Here's the part that surprises most women: it can last anywhere from 2 to 10 years. The average is 4 to 6 years. That's not a blip. That's a chapter.
Menopause itself is officially defined as 12 consecutive months without a period. The average age in Australia is 51. Everything before that? Perimenopause.
So What's Actually Happening?
Your ovaries are gradually producing less oestrogen and progesterone - but not in a neat, orderly way. These hormones fluctuate wildly, which is why perimenopause can feel so unpredictable.
Here's what many women don't know: when progesterone drops faster than oestrogen, the uterine lining thickens more than usual. When it sheds, it can cause heavier-than-normal bleeding - sometimes significantly heavier. Flooding. Clots. Periods that seem to have forgotten their own rules.
If this sounds familiar, you are not imagining it. And you are not alone.
The Symptoms Nobody Warned You About
Hot flushes affect between 45 and 85% of women during perimenopause. Night sweats, mood changes, brain fog, joint pain, low libido, sleep disruption - around 1 in 2 women report sleep problems during this time. And then there's increased bladder sensitivity: that sudden urgency, the leaks that come with sneezing or laughing that feel mortifying but are, in fact, completely normal.
Your body isn't broken. It's changing.
And That Includes What You're Wearing
One thing I kept coming back to when designing Calm Curve was this: traditional shapewear and hot flushes are a terrible combination. That heavy, suffocating feeling that makes you want to rip everything off at 2pm - I wasn't willing to add to that.
Every Calm Curve piece is made with breathable, OEKO-TEX® certified fabric, and Aphrodite features geometric mesh panels specifically designed to allow airflow — so the shapewear moves with your body's temperature, not against it. The cotton-rich lining sits next to your skin, moisture-wicking and soft. It won't fix a hot flush. But it won't make it worse either.
Where Calm Curve Comes In
The heavier bleeding, the unpredictable cycles, the bladder leaks - these were exactly the moments I was thinking about when I designed Calm Curve. Because managing all of this shouldn't mean carrying a change of clothes or spending a fortune on disposables every month.
Aphrodite, our Wave (heavy) absorbency shapewear, was built for those flooding days - 60ml of protection, front to back, even when you're seated. Oshun handles your medium days with smooth, seamless confidence. And Freya is there for the lighter, unpredictable moments with a soft lace design that feels anything but clinical.
Shapewear that smooths, supports, and protects - because perimenopause is already a lot, without adding outfit anxiety to the list.
You Wouldn't Be Where You Are Without This Chapter
Perimenopause is not the beginning of the end. It's just a new part of the story - one that deserves honesty, good information, and honestly, better underwear.
I couldn't help but wonder: what would change if we talked about this more?
